Art of the Siam Kingdom

As the name suggest the art of kingdom is trip that takes you on an artistic journey of Thailand. The Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall use to be a reception hall in Dusit Palace, Bangkok. King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) commissioned the construction of a reception hall. Today it houses the most significant and exclusive pieces of art. It is a converted into an art museum as well as hosts art or cultural occasions every now and then.

Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall - Dusit PalaceThis grand building is influenced by Italian Renaissance and Neo Classic style by architects Mario Tamagno and Annibale Rigotti and is sculpted by the famous Italian sculptor Vittorio Novi, and his nephew Rudolfo Nolli. Special Italian Marble from Carrara, other foreign materials were shipped in for its construction.

Art of KingdomAnanta Samakhom Throne Hall is of two storey and has a 49.5m high dome in the centre, circled by six smaller domes. The interiors are covered with paintings by Professor Galileo Chini and Carlo Riguli based on history of Chakri Dynasty. King Chulalongkorn did not live enough to see the completion of this masterpiece in 1915 and died in 1910, 5 years before.  Many historical events of Thailand’s political and cultural history have been conducted in this throne hall such as the headquarters of the People’s Party during the four days of the 1932 Revolution, the first National People’s Assembly convened in 1932, used as the Parliament House until 1974. Today as an art museum it is open to the general public every day except for three days on Chulalongkorn (23 October), the King’s birthday (5 December) and the Queen’s birthday (12 August).

In front of the Hall is the Royal Plaza with the equestrian statue of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). Examples of the delicate works, replicas of royal thrones and barges, beautiful embroidered screens and the replica of the royal dinner table once used for receiving the royal guests on King Bhumibol’s 60th coronation anniversary, masterpiece handiwork created by members of agricultural families, etc are housed here. These exhibits can be understood through English labels describing its details or headset with English narration. One can also take a part of this experience back home with them through souvenir shop and enjoy a cup of coffee with spectacular view of the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall in its ambiance.
